Automation in iOS Shortcuts goes beyond manual triggers. You can set shortcuts to run automatically at certain times or in response to specific conditions—like Low Power Mode or arriving at a certain location. Below are some of the most common automation categories. Use the links above to jump to each section.
Time of Day
Run a shortcut every morning, evening, or any specific time you choose. Common examples:
- Send a “Good Morning” text at 8 AM.
- Automatically launch a workout app at 6 PM.
- Trigger a “Bedtime Routine” at 10 PM—like dimming lights or silencing notifications.
Setting a time-based automation can help you develop consistent daily habits or manage recurring tasks without lifting a finger.
Arriving/Leaving a Location
Perfect for automatically texting loved ones when you arrive somewhere, or turning on certain device settings when you leave. You could:
- Send a “Home safe” text when you reach your house.
- Start a “Focus Mode” when you get to work.
- Automatically open navigation or music apps when you leave your driveway.
Location-based triggers require you to grant the Shortcuts app permission to access your location. Be mindful of battery usage and privacy when using geofencing features.
Connecting to CarPlay
Launch a “drive mode” playlist or read out messages the moment you connect to CarPlay. Examples:
- Open a preferred music streaming app and start playing your road-trip playlist.
- Set your device to “Do Not Disturb While Driving.”
- Enable an auto-reply for incoming texts that says “I’m driving—will respond soon.”
By automating these tasks, you reduce distractions and streamline your on-the-road experience.
Battery Level
Send yourself a push notification to charge your device, or trigger power-saving settings when the battery dips below a certain percentage. For instance:
- At 20% battery, automatically enable Low Power Mode.
- At 15%, dim your screen or lower volume.
- At 10%, get a notification with a reminder to find a charger or close power-hungry apps.
These automations can help preserve battery life and ensure you’re always aware when your device needs a charge.
Each automation can be created within the Shortcuts app under the “Automation” tab. Make sure you’ve granted any necessary permissions, and remember that some automations might still require confirmation taps depending on iOS version or privacy settings.
