Home Button Actions

What It Does

Use double-press or triple-press of the Home button to quickly access various functions on devices that have a physical Home button.

How to Use

  • Double Press: By default, opens the App Switcher. You can swipe between or close open apps.
  • Triple Press (Accessibility Shortcut): Assign features like VoiceOver, Zoom, AssistiveTouch, etc. via Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut.
  • Note: On newer iPhones without a Home button, you’ll rely on the Side button or specific gestures instead.

Control Center Toggle

What It Does

Quickly access brightness, volume, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, music playback, and more through Control Center.

How to Use

  • Devices with Face ID: Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
  • Devices with Home button: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center.
  • Customize Controls: Go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls.

Notification Center Access

What It Does

View recent notifications (calls, messages, alerts) and manage them quickly.

How to Use

  • Face ID iPhones: Swipe down from the top-left corner (or near the notch on the left) to open Notification Center.
  • Home button iPhones: Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  • Swipe left on a notification to manage/clear it, or long-press for more options.

How It Works

  • Go Home: Swipe up from the bottom edge to return to the Home screen.
  • Open App Switcher: Swipe up from the bottom edge and pause briefly, then release to show open apps.
  • Quick Switch Between Apps: Swipe left or right along the bottom edge to hop between recent apps.

Pull Screen Down for One-Hand Use

  • Swipe down on the bottom edge of the screen to bring the top icons halfway down.
  • Ensure it’s turned on in Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Reachability.

iPad Multitasking Gestures

Quick App Switching & Returning to Home

  • Pinch to Home: Place four/five fingers on the screen, pinch inward to go Home.
  • Swipe Up for App Switcher: Four/five fingers on screen, swipe up to see open apps.
  • Swipe Left/Right: Four/five fingers, move left/right to switch between apps.

iPad Split View & Slide Over

Multitask with Multiple Apps

  • Split View:
    • Open one app.
    • Swipe up from bottom to reveal Dock.
    • Drag another app icon to left/right edge until it “snaps.”
  • Slide Over:
    • Drag an app from the Dock to the center of the screen, creating a floating window.

Picture in Picture (PiP)

Keep Videos Playing in a Floating Window

  • While watching a compatible video (e.g., Apple TV, FaceTime), swipe up or tap Home button.
  • The video shrinks into a small window. Drag it around or swipe it off-screen (audio keeps playing).

Back Tap (iPhone 8+)

Tap the Back of Your Phone to Trigger Actions

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap.
  • Choose Double or Triple Tap, then assign actions (e.g., Screenshot, Control Center, or a custom Shortcut).

Guided Access Shortcut

Lock Device to a Single App

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access, enable it and set a passcode.
  • Open the desired app.
  • Triple-click Home/Side button > tap Start to lock the app.
  • Triple-click again + passcode to exit.

Handoff Between Devices

Continue Tasks from iPhone to iPad or Mac

  • Enable Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, sign in to the same Apple ID on all devices.
  • Start an email, Safari session, or note on one device.
  • On the other device, tap the Dock icon (on iPad/Mac) or Lock Screen corner (on iPhone) to pick up where you left off.

Siri Suggestions & Shortcuts

Quick App & Task Recommendations

  • Go to Settings > Siri & Search, enable “Suggestions on Lock Screen” and “Suggestions in Search.”
  • Siri will learn patterns (e.g., calling a frequent contact or opening an app at a certain time).

Managing & Customizing These Shortcuts

  • Settings > Accessibility:
    • Adjust gestures like Back Tap, Touch Accommodations, Reachability, or triple-click shortcuts.
  • Settings > Control Center:
    • Add or remove toggles (Flashlight, Calculator, Low Power Mode, etc.).
